Access and location
Jing
An Shangri-La, West Shanghai is located in the Jing An Business District, one
of Shanghai’s most prestigious and fashionable business and commercial
districts. The hotel sits on a network of public transportation,
including Metro Lines 2 and 7. It is about 45-minute drive from Pudong
International Airport and only 20 minutes from Hongqiao Airport via the adjacent
elevated Yan’an Middle Ring Road.
Surroundings
Jing An Temple
The Jing An
district takes its name after the iconic Jing An temple. Despite being dwarfed by the surrounding
skyscrapers, the Jing An Temple’s awe-inspiring gold-themed architecture holds
its ground and commands the respect befitting a heritage site.
The temple’s
roots date back to the Song dynasty in 1216. Having undergone numerous
transformations over the centuries, the temple houses the largest jade Buddha in
China and a copper bell from the Ming dynasty. The temple was expanded in 1921, further
enhancing its grandeur. It was
converted into a plastic factory during the Cultural Revolution and was even
destroyed by a fire. Finally, it was restored to its former glory in 1983 at a
cost of US$1 million.
Jing
An Park
Developed as a city park in 1954, Jing An
Park is located in the heart of the city.
The park is likened to an oasis in the middle of an urban jungle. Despite being small, the unassuming park
encompasses a water feature, lush greenery and blooming flowers. Visitors can treat themselves to a display of
Tai Chi every morning from the
elderly park goers who do it as a form of exercise. In another corner, bird lovers display their
song birds with pride, receiving mutual admiration from fellow enthusiasts.
Regardless of the time of the day, Jing An
Park provides respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Shanghai
Exhibition Centre
Beyond the beautiful architecture, the
Shanghai Exhibition Centre holds deep historical value and symbolizes the
Sino-Soviet friendship of the 1950s to 1960s.
Built in accordance with Soviet Neo-classical architectural
specifications, the project was a gift from Stalin of the Soviet Union to the
People’s Republic of China.
To date, the Exhibition Centre retains the
Soviet architectural grandeur it was in the 1950s, both on the interior and
exterior.
Chairman
Mao’s Former Residence
The Mao House was the former residence of
Chairman Mao Tse Tung during his third visit to Shanghai. In his lifetime, Chairman Mao made 55 trips
to Shanghai. During his stay from 5 May
1920 to 7 July 1920, the chairman notably made several political contributions
from this humble residence along Anyi Road.
Aside from playing an integral role in making the “Hunan Self-Governance
Movement” possible, he also penned several papers from this very apartment.
The Mao House is listed as an official site
for “Red Tourism” and protected by the state.
Today, the house is a proud component of the Jing An Kerry Centre and is
being restored as a museum.
